TRAGIC LOSS OF MOUNTAIN NETWORK COLLEAGUES IN HELICOPTER CRASH IN KANCHENJUNGA REGION OF NEPAL

We greatly mourn the loss of three extraordinary members of our WCPA Network in a helicopter crash in Nepal 23 Sept. 2006.

Read the many tributes that poured in from around the world after this tragic loss.

In response, the Eastern Himalayas Memorial Fund has been set up in their memory by the World Wildlife Fund. This Fund will be used to carry on the great Himalayan work of our colleagues, and help create new generations of Himalayan conservationists through the establishment of the Mingma Sherpa and Chandra Gurung Conservation Scholarships to build local conservation expertise. When these scholarships are fully funded, each year the WWF will sponsor the university studies of eight individuals from rural Himalayan communities. We encourage your support of these scholarship funds.

FIRST OF SERIES OF AUSTRALIAN ALPS-IUCN WCPA MOUNTAIN BIOME SCIENCE-MANAGEMENT WORKSHOPS PROVED A BIG SUCCESS MAY23-24, 2006

The Mountain Biome, WCPA/IUCN (Graeme Worboys and colleagues) are assisting the Australian Alps Program by running a series of Science amd Management Forums. The first of these, which focused on the subject of fire management, was held May 23-24 in Jindabyne, immediately prior to the Alps Operational Group meeting at the same venue. The objective was to strengthen the relationship between scientific research and management. The key theme was 'What have we learnt from scientific research and monitoring post 2003 fires and implications for Alps protected area management'. Over 70 practicing managers and scientists were in attendance and it's reported that the speakers and facilitators were excellent. Graeme has stated that

"The financial investment made by the Australian Alps Liaison Committee was really appreciated, and a great investment for the future improved fire management of the Alps."

The next Forum is slated for Spring 2007.
